The Catholic community only gives you two options. You have to pick between your sexuality or your religion. Many individuals go through a stage where they don't have a healthy balance since they have to pick one over the other. What we fail to realize is that these identities play an important role in the lives of many.
There are multiple sites that welcome LGBTQ individuals in the Catholic community. These sites include Instagram accounts such as @catholichappy, twitter feeds such as @GNRC, which stands for Global Network of Rainbow Catholics, and facebook pages such as Gay Straight Catholic Alliance - LGBTQS. These sites welcome Catholic individuals who have identified as part of the LGBTQ community and most importantly attempt to bridge both sexuality and religion into one world. These organizations play a major role in the lives of many young queer Catholics who have felt ashamed of themselves and felt as an out-caste within their religious community. Social media such as the examples included here have brought together this community of people that most were not aware of and help others see that it is possible to be both Catholic and identify as a member of the LGBTQ community.
Yes, social media has brought together many Latinx Queer Catholics as well as other Catholics who identity as Queer, but there are certain individuals who are making a stand and difference with their voices. Some of these people being Ellen and Pope Francis. Each person plays a major role in the sense that they are fighting against LGBTQ discrimination and religious discrimination. Ellen, for example, responded to an anti-gay pastor that saw her show as "brainwashing and promoting lesbianism". Pope Francis changed the way most Catholics see those who identify as part of the LGBTQ community by stating that we have to be more accepting of our brothers and sisters.
