Joteria is a word and identity that is being reclaimed by queer Latinx/Chicanx people. It was once an insult to those who would not fit the heteronormative standards of the these communities. However, now people use the term as an identity that is far more complex than a queer Latinx individual. Joteria has become more than just a term that people choose to identify with. It is art, a social movement, a way for Latinx queer people to express themselves in a way that is unique to them and their culture. For so long, Latinx men struggled to find a place within the LGBTQ community and with Joteria, they take a step closer to solidifying that space.
